Tonight i will be talking about an experience a parent had upon visiting a school she was accepted to.
Here is her story:
“Just got back from a campus visit to ####. The campus is beautiful! The experience was not. My girl was accepted back in last November. As of today we have received no financial aid information. NOTHING! So I say while we are here on campus let’s go find out why. Turns out that according to financial aid she’s not even a student. They had NO information on her at all. We had to provide the student number to them so that they could search for her. They finally see her in the system and we ask what scholarships she qualifies for and they tell us None because she didn’t get her information turned in on time. I smile politely cause you know by now I’m pissed as hell, cause I know this is not true. We have receipts!!! We are then told that this matter will have to go up the chain and then we’ll see what can be done. By this time I am livid.
Ace in the hole
My daughters godparents live in #### and are both professors at ####. I didn’t want to drag them into this fight but at that point felt like I had no choice. I stop by godmomma’s office. We tell her what’s been happening. Within five minutes, my daughter had a scholarship offer that would cover everything from god momma’s department. God momma called the VP of admissions, they had a long conversation and my daughter should now qualify for one of the merit scholarships. We hopefully will find out which one this upcoming week.
We must have spend at least 2 hours in the financial aid office. Only to be given pretty much no information. Informal conversations with key people and we left with scholarship offer with more on the table.
I know God is good all the time!!! I’d say we are blessed beyond measure. My daughter can go to school she wants and I know she’ll be surrounded by people who love her and will about her wellbeing. As a parent, I don’t think I could ask for more.
On another note: Why did this experience have to be sooooooo frustrating? How is it that the girl has a student number, email, #### account, and the like but financial aid can find NO information that she is a student at all? And then when you do “find” her in the system, you say it’s the students’ fault for why she won’t receive any scholarships. The lesson here is to keep all receipts. Everything had to be turned in by November 1. My daughter turned in everything by September and we could prove it. But I’m wondering how many parents/students are out there wondering why they haven’t heard anything from #### but they can’t get there to stand in someone’s face nor do they know someone on campus. What is the alternative?
